Born of the African Bantu culture that encourages community while celebrating individuality –
a culture that says: “I am because we are.”
African born, Dallas designer Tendai Tawonezvi, is the creativity behind the label NeoBantu. Bringing vibrancy, color and African accents to her classic and modern feminine styles by way of dresses, skirts, shirts, coats, and even beaded accessories!
Neobantu hopes to bring an abundance of vibrancy into your life through her bold designs. We recently played dress up at her Southside on Lamar studio, even the studio is colorful, styling her pieces with our own personal style of bohemian, rustic and laid back cool.
A little about Tendai and her ever-evolving company….
Tell our readers more about Neobantu and how you got started.
We started NeoBantu in December of 2013. I guess I needed a creative outlet, something that would allow me to play a little and explore some ideas.
Where did your creativity come from when creating your collection?
That’s a hard question, I don’t think the creativity comes from one specific place. For me it’s a new way of looking at something, seeing what’s possible (and sometimes not).
Describe what it means to be a Neobantu girl.
Well, it means not being a wallflower or standing on the sidelines.
Well, I like to create clothes I would wear, so I guess there is a little of my style in NeoBantu.
How important is social media to your company?
Social media let’s us interact with our audience which is a lot of fun. We get to hear what our customers want, how they wear our clothes, where they wear them. We love having people over at the showroom but not everyone can always make it – social media allows us to “hang out” with them too.
There is no “right way” to wear color or print.
Now who wants to become Dallas’ newest Neobantu girl???
Where Wear will we be next….
