African born, Dallas designer Tendai Tawonezvi, is the creativity behind the label NeoBantu. Bringing vibrancy, color and African accents to her classic and modern feminine styles by way of dresses, skirts, shirts, coats, and even beaded accessories!

With her love of  travel and style, Neobantu came to life in 2013. Tend was able to meet and form her own skilled team of equally passionate tastemakers fond of African cultures just as much as she is! Still going strong today, this contemporary ready to wear women’s line focuses on timeless, artfully designed garments while bringing the vibrancy of her African roots through bold prints and colorful combinations.

Neobantu hopes to bring an abundance of  vibrancy into your life through her bold designs. We recently played dress up at her Southside on Lamar studio, even the studio is colorful, styling her pieces with our own personal style of bohemian, rustic and laid back cool.

A little about Tendai and her ever-evolving company….

Tell our readers more about Neobantu and how you got started.

We started NeoBantu in December of 2013. I guess I needed a creative outlet, something that would allow me to play a little and explore some ideas.

Where did your creativity come from when creating your collection?

That’s a hard question, I don’t think the creativity comes from one specific place. For me it’s a new way of looking at something, seeing what’s possible (and sometimes not).

Describe what it means to be a Neobantu girl.

Well, it means not being a wallflower or standing on the sidelines.

“Clothes don’t change the world but the women that wear them do” –
Being a NeoBantu girl is all about being present, Bringing and being a confident, sexy vibrancy.
How did your own personal style play into designing your collection?
Well, I like to create clothes I would wear, so I guess there is a little of my style in NeoBantu.

How important is social media to your company?

Social media let’s us interact with our audience which is a lot of fun. We get to hear what our customers want, how they wear our clothes, where they wear them. We love having people over at the showroom but not everyone can always make it – social media allows us to “hang out” with them too.

What’s one thing ladies should take away from wearing your pieces?
There is no “right way” to wear color or print.
What’s next for Neobantu?
We are working with some really exciting partners, exciting prints and addition of textures and other techniques we have not used in the past. We will be hosting more events at the showroom and taking NeoBantu out on the road!
